Inadequate funding for key populations jeopardises the plan of eradicating the AIDS epidemic within a decade. This is one of the findings of the first ever study on global funding for the response analysing resources allocated to these vulnerable groups in low and middle-income countries.
The report: Fast-Track or Off Track: how insufficient funding for key populations jeopardises ending AIDS by 2030 also highlights that funding for these marginalised communities is “way off track”, with only 2% of funding for HIV programmes targeting key populations.
The research was commissioned by Aidsfonds and supported by key population programmes Bridging the Gaps and PITCH.
The report was launched today at the HIV2020 conference during a session where the findings were presented for activists, donors and policymakers.
Thanks to the EC’s political and financial commitment and strategic steering, significant progress has been made in the last two decades toward ending HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. In the face of the catastrophic impact caused by COVID-19 on the fight against the three diseases, the EC’s leadership remains as critical as ever.

In August 2022, Aidsfonds and You(th) Care partners commissioned the African Alliance to undertake a country-specific SRHR and HIV policy mapping and analysis in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. This process sought to provide the You(th) Care consortium with insights into each country’s policy environment, including the identification of barriers and opportunities. The policy analysis supports, You(th) Care in its work to promote and realise adolescent and young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights, and related self-care needs.
