This Love Alliance multi-country case study comprehensively analyses the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in ten African countries: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. With only 48% of people in Africa having access to adequate healthcare, UHC is essential to ensure everyone can access affordable, quality care. However, it is crucial that UHC does not leave behind key and vulnerable populations (KVPs), such as sex workers, people who use drugs, and LGBTIQ+ individuals. These groups often face stigma, discrimination, and criminalisation, which severely hinder their access to UHC.
The report highlights the current status of UHC, access for KVPs, the intersection of HIV/AIDS and UHC, and the role of civil society organisations (CSOs). It concludes with actionable recommendations for improving UHC, including policy adjustments and stronger partnerships with CSOs.
