I’m proud of starting this project because we have been implementing some activities in a few districts but with this funding, we are going to scale up to 30 sub-counties in the three districts. Says David Bitira, Director of Programs at Community Health Alliance Uganda (CHAU) and partner in the recently started Bloom project. This project works to achieve a healthy future for children and their young mothers (10-24) living with or exposed to HIV in Uganda. Watch his interview below!
David Bitira (Community Health Alliance Uganda) about the Bloom Project
“There are many who are not yet identified, they don’t know their status, and therefore, they are not on treatment, including their children. So this project aims to find these younger mothers with HIV and their children, started them on treatment, retain them in care so that they are healthier by the end of the project. What I will be most happy about is that, during implementation of this program, we are going to empower the younger mothers living with HIV to be able to care and manage their health.
So I’m proud of starting this project because we have been implementing some activities in a few districts but with this funding, we are going to scale up to 30 sub counties in the three districts. Therefore we’ll be able to reach many more younger mothers living with HIV, and at least address most of their needs, compared to previously when we have been reaching only a few with the limited funding.”
Young mothers living with HIV experience the burden of double stigma. This prevents them and their children form accessing HIV, health, education and other services. The Bloom project works to achieve a healthy future for children and their young mothers (10-24) living with or exposed to HIV in Uganda. The project is an inspiring collaboration of three Ugandan community-based organisations: Community Health Alliance Uganda (CHAU), Joy Initiatives Uganda and Uganda Young Positives, and is funded by Aidsfonds.
