Aidsfonds is initiating a partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Maputo, Mozambique. This collaboration represents a significant investment by the Dutch government in the global HIV response. Aidsfonds, awarded €15 million for the period 2026-2030, is proud to be one of the partners within the Embassy’s regional HIV instrument. Through this policy framework, the Netherlands continues to build on its international leadership in the field of HIV and AIDS. Aidsfonds applies the knowledge and experience gained through its HIV programmes abroad and from its work within the Netherlands.
Community-led approach at the heart
The community-led approach focuses on collaboration with communities and empowers them to play a central role in enhancing health and human rights. In this approach, Aidsfonds connects communities, governments, scientists, health workers, and other stakeholders. The new funding enables the organisation – together with communities and partner organisations – to actively expand access to HIV prevention and treatment across six countries in Southern Africa: Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Eswatini. Aidsfonds also supports communities in their advocacy efforts to ensure that stigma, discrimination, and criminalisation are addressed in a sustainable and lasting way.
“The global HIV response is at a tipping point”, says Mark Vermeulen, director of Aidsfonds. “On the one hand, we see a deep financial crisis due to USAID budget cuts; on the other, enormous opportunities thanks to medical breakthroughs such as lenacapavir. It is in this context that the new Dutch programme comes at the right time. It enables us to ensure that HIV prevention receives the attention and financial support that it so urgently needs.”
Aidsfonds looks forward to working with the Embassy in Maputo and future regional and national partners to continue working towards a world without AIDS.
