Our committed paediatric HIV partners, participated in the International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) 2023 in Harare, Zimbabwe. The partners showcased groundbreaking work, innovative approaches, and impactful interventions focusing on paediatric and adolescent HIV care. During the conference, partner organisations conducted interactive sessions addressing age-appropriate disclosure methods, community-paediatric HIV interventions, and best practices for young mothers living with HIV in Uganda. The partners collectively aimed to address the unique challenges faced by children and adolescents living with HIV, presenting evidence-based programs and policies that have positively impacted lives across Nigeria and Uganda.
The ICASA conference serves as a global platform for partners to share insights, strategies, and experiences, engaging with policymakers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates. The 2023 conference theme, ‘Let communities lead,’ emphasized grassroots initiatives and community-driven responses in addressing HIV/AIDS through a multi-sectoral approach. The partners demonstrated resilience and progress, showcasing the power of collaboration and unwavering dedication. ICASA 2023 reinforced the commitment to building a world where every child can grow up free from the burdens of HIV, emphasizing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and collective action for an HIV-free generation.
Medan faces significant challenges related to stigma and discrimination against PLHIV and the LGBTQI+ community. Access to healthcare services is limited, as many people are hesitant to seek medical help due to fears of rejection and discrimination. HIV issues and LGBTQI+ rights receive little policy attention, with healthcare services lacking inclusivity and minimal public education, worsening the situation for the LGBTQI+ community in addressing HIV in Medan.

Three new pilot projects for children living with HIV
In summer 2024 Aidsfonds launched three new pilot projects for children living with HIV. These projects were selected by Aidsfonds’ Paediatric HIV Advisory Panel. The projects aim to test new and innovative community-based approaches to identify and support children living with HIV who are underserved. This is important as these children are hard to reach, falling through the crack in the health care system.
