APIPHCARE+ Project
Nigeria has one of the largest paediatric HIV epidemics in the world. More than 200,000 children and adolescents are living with HIV, yet many remain undiagnosed or start treatment too late. Children are less likely than adults to be tested, linked to care and receive lifesaving treatment. Many children are missed because they fall outside routine prevention and testing services. Children born to mothers who were not tested during pregnancy, who acquired HIV during breastfeeding, or who were delivered outside health facilities often remain invisible to the healthcare system. Without early diagnosis and treatment, HIV can quickly become life-threatening for children. APIPHCare+ helps close these gaps by finding children living with HIV, linking them quickly to treatment and supporting them to stay in care. Working across communities and health facilities in Rivers State, Nigeria, the project brings together healthcare workers, community counsellors, traditional birth attendants and local authorities to identify children who have been missed by existing services.
