The Netherlands is cutting back on its contribution to the Global Fund
In the coming years, the Netherlands will cut back on the budget for the fight against AIDS. The Netherlands will contribute €10 million less in the coming three years, a total of €156 million. That was announced today in Lyon, where world leaders gathered to express their ambition in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. They presented their financial contribution, for the next three years, to the Global Fund to combat the three epidemics. The fund had previously calculated that at least 15% extra investments are needed if we want to be able to win the battle against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
Mark Vermeulen, director of Aidsfonds: “Aidsfonds is disappointed. The Netherlands says it stands for a policy aimed at promoting sexual rights, protecting vulnerable groups and stopping AIDS, but lacks any decisiveness without financial support. It is impossible to explain that the Netherlands, usually a frontrunner in the fight against AIDS, is saving money instead of increasing investment. I call on the House of Representatives to still increase the contribution to the Global Fund by the necessary 15% and thus enabling a generation without AIDS.
