The Global Fund: raising $18 billion to end HIV/AIDS, malaria & tuberculosis

Today, the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced that it needs at least $18 billion over the next three years to tackle the three epidemics worldwide. Aidsfonds calls on the Dutch government to make a generous contribution.

The Global Fund shared its Investment Case today. In it, the Fund shows that securing USD 18 billion would allow saving 20 million lives in the next three years.

Every three years, the organisation asks governments and other major donors to make a pledge to accelerate the fight against HIV and AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. In the second half of this year, they will announce their contribution at the Global Fund Replenishment Conference, which will take place in the United States.

Important results

The Global Fund was established in 2002 and has since then achieved significant results in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. By focusing on making tests and life-saving medicines widely available, more than 44 million lives were saved. By putting the people most affected by the epidemics at the centre, the Fund has been able to turn the tide in many countries in recent years.

Impact of COVID-19

However, this important progress came under considerable pressure due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. For instance, key HIV prevention and testing services declined by 11% and 22% respectively compared to the previous year, in countries where the Global Fund is active. If the world wants to mitigate these disruptions, stepping up investment is inevitable. This is the only way for the world to achieve its goals and stop the spread of HIV, TB and malaria.

Ending AIDS and other epidemics is achievable because we know how to do it. Therefore, we call on the Dutch government to make a generous contribution!
