Statement of support with HIV2020 - Aidsfonds

Aidsfonds works towards the end of AIDS in a world where all people affected by HIV/AIDS have access to prevention, treatment, care and support. We know that directly supporting communities that are at the highest risk of infection is the most effective approach in the response to HIV/AIDS. Aidsfonds has always played a pioneering role in focusing the HIV/AIDS response on those population groups who are affected the most by the epidemic due to stigma and discrimination. It saddens us to realise that many of our partners, who represent these populations groups, will not be able to attend AIDS2020, the 23rd International Aids Conference to be held in San Francisco, 6-10 July 2020. Travel restrictions to the US for sex workers, people who use drugs and people who have been formerly arrested will make it impossible for these representatives to attend AIDS2020.

Therefore we endorse the initiative for HIV2020, an alternative conference to AIDS2020 that will be held simultaneously in Mexico City from 5 – 7 July 2020. HIV2020 will be an inclusive, international community-led event that centres around the communities who have been most disproportionately impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It is organised by an alliance of global key population-led networks, networks of people living with HIV, treatment activists and their supporters. It will provide a safe alternative for individuals who cannot enter the US. The theme of HIV2020 is ‘Community Reclaiming the Global Response’, and will centre around issues of equity, parity and inclusion. We see HIV2020 as an important opportunity to reaffirm the leading role communities play in the global HIV response.
