PITCH urges for strong commitment to community-led responses at WHA

At the 72nd annual World Health Assembly (WHA) this week, the Partnership to Inspire, Transform and Connect the HIV response (PITCH) joins the Free Space Process partners’ to call on Member States to articulate an unambiguous and strong commitment to community-led responses. These are essential to the prioritisation of primary health care, achievement of universal health coverage and the acceleration of progress across all of the SDGs.

One of the key agenda items for the WHA for PITCH is universal health coverage and primary health care. The WHO discussion on community health workers delivering primary health care: opportunities and challenges (Agenda item 11.5), will be our entry point to profile and inform states about the important role that communities need to play besides the role of community health workers.

The WHA, taking place in Geneva from 20-28 May 2019, is the WHO’s governing body. Comprised of 194 governments, it makes recommendations to Member States and gives instructions, and directives to WHO. Universal health coverage will be one of the key themes discussed during the WHA.

PITCH activities at WHA

PITCH is involved in different activities. On Thursday 23nd May PITCH joins the Free Space Process, International Red Cross Federation, STOP AIDS, GNP+, CSSN and Medicus Mundi in a formal side event on boosting community-led responses to reach the most marginalised communities in primary health care and universal health coverage. This event will showcase the importance of increasing the understanding, and scaling up, of political and financial support to community-led responses to health. Our panellists will discuss innovative models and approaches to community responses to health. Together with the FSP, PITCH has also developed an advocacy paper on the role of communities in PHC and UHC.
