Aidsfonds part of top 20 HIV-related Philanthropic Funders in 2021

Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) released the report 'Philanthropic Support to Address HIV and AIDS in 2021'. The report showcases HIV-related giving by philanthropic organisations in 2021. It captured data on 5,640 grants, awarded by 187 foundations to 131 countries; totaled $692 million, a decline of $9 million, or 1 percent, from 2020.

Aidsfonds is amongst the top 20 HIV-related Philantrophic Funders captured in the report, coming in 12th place. In 2021, Aidsfonds contributed a total of 6.27 million dollar to the HIV response. Being a part of the Love Alliance, the report showcases the Love Alliance grantmaking model in Eastern and Southern Africa as an example of this contribution. As mentioned in the report, "since 2021, the Love Alliance has supported 150 community organisations through its participatory grantmaking model to do advocacy, movement building, research, pilots of community-led service models, and litigation". It underscored that "the Love Alliance knows that directly supporting communities that are at the highest risk of HIV is the most effective approach. People in these communities know best what they need to remove the barriers to prevention and treatment. Participatory grantmaking provided a mechanism to look critically at our role as funders and to share responsibility with communities so that they were able to decide on our funding decisions. This participatory process is about more than effective grantmaking: It also creates a paradigm shift in how we work alongside communities".

We are going back to the time when literally no one had access to HIV care. Safe sex within the LGBTQ+ community will become a myth, hearsay. We will challenge the law in the Constitutional Court. This will take a long break but I don’t want the law to see the light of day. International solidarity is extremely important and the international community must continue to speak out and continue its support to LGBTQI+ organisations.
