How can the new European parliament advance global health? Civil society weighs in on the EU’s need to sustain its leadership.

The COVID-19 pandemic made the world realise how global health can create immediate and lasting impact across sectors. It put health to the forefront of the EU’s external action efforts, and how important health is for a stronger, more resilient world, and as an enabler for many other priorities.

As a forerunner in advancing global health, it was apt that the EU adopted a new Global Health strategy and renewed its commitment to Global Health Initiatives, like the Global Fund back in 2022. Strengthening global health has been at the heart of the EU’s dedication and commitment to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), and with 30% of the European population believing Health is the most critical area for EU and partner cooperation there is even more impetus for the newly elected Members of the European Parliament to continue to honour the EU’s commitment to advancing health equity and ensuring the human right to health for everyone.

A healthier world means a safer and more prosperous future for all, including for people living in the EU, and investing in health and research initiatives not only helps in creating a more stable and prosperous international community but also secures the EU’s position as a pivotal actor in global governance. This ready reckoner lays out the what, why, and how the European Parliament can continue to champion key areas in Global Health.
